Invisible Hand

Snookered

Dang, I'm gonna need a nap and lots of ibuprofen thanks to last night's unbelievable Dan Deacon/Future Islands/Teeth Mountain show in Williamsburg, VA. Sonically and communally the best concert I've been to in probably the last year or so.

Anyway, once I've returned from slumberland, I fully expect to see you at The Box tonight, where Thomas Dean and Adam Smith will be spinning records/wrangling mp3s this evening. Starts around 10, no cover. Also, these guys comprise 50% of the lineup for Cville's best band at the moment, Invisible Hand. If you haven't downloaded their free SXSW promo EP yet, do it do it do it. And if you'd like a little background or context, then check out this interview that Rob conducted with Adam for the Dec.

Let's Try This Again

Ugh, sleepless weekend. MEN on Friday was excellent -- great crowd, killer tunes blended expertly, and somehow Gravity Lounge turned out to be a far more dance friendly venue than I would've expected. And then last night I ended up catching Invisible Hand at the Tea Bazaar while drinking chai and eating pumpkin cheesecake pie (thanks Michael!) for dinner, then missing Caninos at the Laundromat, trying to DJ the afterparty but the booze had dried up, then trying to relocate to another party where tunes were wanted only to find that the kids were less interested in bass than in blasting, uh, Sonic Youth, Hanson, and Blink 182 out of a busted stereo. After nearly giving up, Jack/Andy/Jack/Andy and our extended crew overran the place and by 2 AM we had a small but healthy dance party going. Justice, James Brown, !!!, Juan Maclean, Estelle, Wu Tang, Mary J. Blige, Tribe Called Quest, and a 50 Cent/Nine Inch Nails mashup got dropped before it became way too late and we all finally called it a night. Fun!

Now emerging to let you know that DBB Plays Cups is playing yet another set at The Box on Monday night alongside this Bmore band, Scary River. If you caught our set last week at Preston + 10th, you can probably expect a retreat from the gaping maw of noise and back into the simple comforts of tunefulness. No cover, as usual.

They DJ, They Play, Then I DJ

Friday:
MEN (ex-Le Tigre) DJing at Gravity Lounge for $5 at party o'clock. They were amazing when I first saw them a year ago (my only gripe was the DJ set ended at midnight) but tonight will supposedly last until 2 AM. Rockit.

Saturday:
You have two great options:
1) At the Laundromat (e-mail or call me for directions to this house which is hosting shows on the DL): Cinemasophia, Caninos, and The Fiends are playing. Then I will be DJing the party that follows in my first public DJing gig, which will hopefully rule. Expect Lil Wayne, Punjabi MC, the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song, Liquid Liquid, Arthur Russell, James Brown, and way more. Sweat.

2) OR, another great show: Extraordinaires, Invisible Hand, and Raquellos at the Teahaus. Probably a super cheap cover.

If...

If you are reading this --

AND --

you are in Charlottesville tonight (Monday Dec 22nd):

You Should:

Go See Invisible Hand and DBB Plays Cups live at The Box. DJ Lincoln Doolittle (aka John Ruscher) will be spinning afterwards.

If I were in Cville tonight I would: 1) be playing drums for DBB Plays Cups; 2) enjoy the hell out of an Invisible Hand set and 3) dance all night when John hits the decks.

More DBB Plays Cups related stuff to follow soon -- watch this space!
